The images below are from NASA. They are available on the Visible Earth website, along with many others from all over our beautiful planet. They were chosen for this page because they are specific to Huerfano County and offer a larger perspective on where we live than any of the other photos on this site. Sometimes we need to be reminded that as beautiful as the countryside we live in is, it is only a small part of the whole of Planet Earth. And these satellite images also let us know that the arbitrary lines that define what we call "Huerfano County" really have no meaning where Mother Earth is concerned. Part of the reasoning behind the creation of this website is to help us acquaint the rest of the world with this tiny corner of existence where we are, and what we love most about being here. This 3D image is a graphic generated using topographic data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission and an enhanced false-color Landsat 5 satellite image. The height of the terrain is exaggerated by two times. The Landsat Thematic Mapper image used here is from an on-line mosaic of Landsat images for the continental United States. All the data was acquired in February, 2000. The view is looking southwest at the Spanish Peaks from above Cucharas Canyon.
